Year End Planning for Business Tax Deductions

Friday, December 16, 2011 by Ed Daily

2011 is racing to an end but there is time left to find tax deductions for your business before December 31, 2011. With some tax planning your 2011 tax bill can be reduced.

  • If you are a cash basis business do not bill your customers until after December 31, 2011. Without a bill your customers will not send a payment, no payment equals no income.
  • Prepay expenses.  The IRS allows cash basis business taxpayers to prepay and deduct up to 12 months of expenses in advance.
  • Has your children helped with your business this year?  Pay your children for the work performed.  Depending on how your business is organized you can pay your minor children and have the payment deductible to the business and tax free to the children. If your business is a single member LLC or a proprietorship no payroll taxes are due on W2 earnings of your minor child.  If your business is a corporation the tax savings benefit is reduced
  • Reimburse your section 105 medical plan.  To qualify as a business deduction for this year the reimbursement must be completed by midnight December 31, 2011.  If you do not have a section 105 medical plan contact us to learn more.
  • Use your credit card to create 2011 tax deductions. Purchase using the credit card in your corporation's name and the deduction date is the date of purchase. If using your personal card for the corporation's purchasing ensure the reimbursement takes place before December 31, 2011.
  • Purchase equipment. Purchases up to $500,000 qualify for section 179 immediate expensing.

The above are brief descriptions of some of the steps available, contact us to lean more on these items and other steps you can take to reduce you tax bill and keep more of your money.

Mid Year Tax Checkup for Individuals

Thursday, July 21, 2011 by Ed Daily
2011 is half over, have you given any thought about your 2011 tax return preparation?  No, the Phoenix heat has not gotten to me now is a good  for a mid year tax checkup to tweak your tax planning strategy.
If you are an employee, is your withholding at the correct level? There is an earlier post on this blog with a video showing how to adjust your amount of federal tax withheld from your paycheck.  If your withholding is too high your net pay is reduced and you are giving the government an interest free loan. The federal government needs the money but you can put that money to better use.  If your withholding is too low you could have a large tax payment to make by April 16, 2012 and a possible penalty for under withholding. A small adjustment now to your withholding amount can adjust for the shortfall in the first six months, but to keep the adjustments small act now to make time your ally. At CPA on Wheels the mid year review is included with our tax preparation service.  We provide support to our clients throughout the year. If CPA on Wheels prepared your tax returns all we need is a copy of your latest pay stubs and information on any changes to your financial picture. Changes could be a birth of a child or other changes to  dependents, changes to your mortgage, or a withdrawal from a retirement account.  These are some factors that can change your tax picture contact us for a more complete list.
This is a brief listing of items that can effect the amount of tax you'll owe the government, contact us for a complete review click here cpaonwheels.com/individual.html to schedule your appointment today.

Starting a Business

Saturday, July 16, 2011 by Ed Daily
Starting a business is an exciting but sometime confusing process.  One frequently asked question is how should my business be organized?  Should it be a sole proprietor, partnership, corporation or limited liability company (LLC)?  Each form of organization has its own benefits and should be matched to your situation. A Certified Public Accountant (CPA) can explain the tax treatment and tax implications of each form of organization. A CPA can also provide business accounting services including bookkeeping to ensure all income and expense items are recorded. Proper bookkeeping will help you manage your business and help your CPA prepare accurate tax returns and assist with tax planning to minimize your tax bill.

In Arizona filing the paperwork to form a corporation or LLC is regulated.  An attorney can prepare the paperwork but if you decide not to use an attorney ensure that you select a Certified Legal Document Preparer (CLDP).  A CLDP is registered with the Arizona Supreme Court and is authorized to prepare legal documents for the public. Click on this link azcourts.gov/cld/LegalDocumentPreparers.aspx to learn more about this program and see a list of preparers.

CPA on Wheels is a Phoenix CPA firm that assists business owners choose the best form of business organization.  Ed Daily is a Certified Legal Document Preparer and can prepare the  necessary forms to create your business entity as well as securing tax identification numbers. Income Tax Refunds?

Saturday, February 19, 2011 by Ed Daily

Preparing income tax returns the question that is repeatedly asked is am I receiving a refund and if so how much? Where does the tax refund come from, does the government send out checks out of the goodness of its heart? No, the refund is your money that you over paid to the government over the past year.  Each pay check taxes are withheld from your gross wages, this is done as the government requires Americans to pay their tax liability on an ongoing basis throughout the year.  If too much tax is withheld your net pay each pay check will be less that it could be and the government is able to hold your money until you file your tax return and claim your refund.  Does this matter?  It depends, do you mind giving the federal government an interest free loan? Or, would you want additional money in your pay check each pay period?  In 2009 the average federal tax refund was $3,036 this equates to $253 per month.  If your federal withholding rate was adjusted to more closely reflect your tax bill you will be able to increase your take home pay. IRS form W-4 is used to change your withholdings amounts, I have a video that will guide you through this process.
